Clerestory. An interiors practice site that follows daylight from dawn to dusk.
- A website concept for a quiet London interiors practice: the whole page is lit by one travelling day, from dawn blush to blue hour
- Hand-coded motion throughout: a travelling band of light, photographs that dissolve into ink line drawings, a real-time cloth hero that answers the cursor
- 8.3 millisecond median frame time through the animated hero in testing, with a complete reduced-motion experience and full keyboard access
A studio concept by Hammer & Pixel
Clerestory is an invented brand. We build self-initiated concepts to show our approach where client work cannot: the brand is fiction, the brief is real, and so is every line of the build.
The brief
Design a website for a small London interiors practice working in limestone, timber and daylight. It had to feel quiet, architectural and material-led, and it had to refuse the generic language of luxury: no gold, no stock marble, no superlatives. The site had to behave the way the practice designs. Around light.
The concept
The page is a room the sun moves through. The visit begins at dawn and ends at dusk: grounds warm towards midday and cool into blue hour, shadows cross the page as the sun crosses the sky, and a thin band of light travels with the visitor, igniting captions as it passes. The studio's own name gets its moment: a clerestory is the high band of windows that carries daylight deep into a room, and the page pauses once to show one glowing.
The specification
- Premium editorial presentation on desktop and phone
- An original motion system, not a plugin
- Background film with a visible pause control
- A complete reduced-motion experience, not a switch-off
- Interactive project imagery
- A real-time 3D material study
- No templates, no frameworks
- Clear concept labelling on the page itself
What Hammer & Pixel built
- A page-wide daylight system driven by scroll: one clock lights the grounds, the shadows, the imagery and the 3D study together
- A real-time cloth hero: sheer linen in raw WebGL, backlit by dawn windows, breathing and answering the cursor. It ships behind a self-enforcing frame-rate gate and falls back to film on any device that cannot hold it
- Photograph-to-drawing reveals: each project dissolves into an ink line drawing and back, driven by scroll or hover
- A turned-stone vessel study: procedural travertine with true pores and honed faces, lit by the same sun as the rest of the page, staged as a pinned scroll beat
- Editorial copy throughout: project stories, a plain three-step way of working, and not one line of filler
