Custom-coded vs a page builder.
Squarespace, GoDaddy Website Builder and WordPress with Elementor. Here is the trade-off, and who each one suits.
Squarespace, GoDaddy and WordPress with Elementor share one bargain. You trade speed and control for being able to change the site yourself, which is a good deal if you will actually drive it. The builder layer is not free, the maintenance becomes your job, and ten town pages is where it stops being fun. Ours is £1,000 for the build, paid once.

Three different tools, one shared bargain
Squarespace, GoDaddy Website Builder and WordPress with Elementor are not the same product. They do share the same bargain, which is why it makes sense to weigh them as a class. You trade some speed and some control for the ability to change the site yourself without ringing anybody. For a lot of firms that is a good trade, and if you are the sort of person who will keep the site current, it is a very good one.
Here is the shape of each. Squarespace has the best-looking defaults of the three, and it is hard to make a Squarespace site look cheap. GoDaddy Website Builder is the fastest way from nothing to something live, and it is aimed squarely at the owner doing it themselves. WordPress with Elementor gives you the most room to move, because the software underneath is yours, and in exchange it gives you the most to keep on top of: the core, the theme, the plugins and the backups.
Where the bargain costs a trade firm
The builder layer is not free
Every one of these puts a layer between your words and the browser, so the page carries code that describes the editor as well as code that draws your site. Sometimes that costs you very little. Sometimes, once a theme and eight plugins are stacked up, it costs you a lot. There is no honest way to put a number on it from here, because it depends entirely on what gets installed. So measure it: run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights, look at the mobile number rather than the desktop one, and run ours alongside it.
Maintenance is a job, and it is your job
This one is specific to WordPress and it is the thing people underestimate. The software is free to download and open source, and its own download page is clear that installing it yourself means bringing your own hosting and domain. WordPress download page, read 15 September 2026. Free to download is not free to run. Plugins update, themes break, and the site that goes quiet on a Tuesday is yours to fix at eleven at night. Hosted builders take that away from you, which is a genuine argument for them.
Subscriptions, plural
The plan is rarely the whole bill. Squarespace publishes four website plans, currently Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced. Squarespace pricing, read 15 September 2026. Elementor Pro is sold annually across Essential, Advanced Solo, Advanced and Expert, on top of a WordPress install you are already hosting. Elementor pricing, read 15 September 2026. GoDaddy lists its Website Builder plans on its own UK site. Add the forms add-on, the booking add-on and the hosting, and total it up before you compare anything with anything.
Ten towns is where it stops being fun
Most trade work comes from someone searching a job and a place. Doing that properly means a real page for every town you cover, each one saying something true about that town rather than the same paragraph with the name swapped. In a builder, that is copy and paste, and then it is copy and paste again every time you change a price. Three towns is fine. Ten is an evening a month forever.
The template problem
Good templates are popular templates, and popular templates end up under your competitors too. Homeowners comparing three firms who cannot tell them apart fall back on price, and price is the argument you least want to have. Your own photos of your own jobs, and words that sound like you on the phone, are what break the tie.
Nine things worth comparing
| What you are comparing | Page builder | Custom-coded by us |
|---|---|---|
| Price of the build | Cheap to start and open ended after that. A theme, a builder licence, a host and your own evenings, and the licence renews every year. The figures are published on each vendor site and move by country and by term. | £1,000 for the build, paid once, after you have seen it live. No tiers. Nothing a month at the sale. Our pricing page. |
| Speed on 4G | Depends on the theme, the plugins and the images more than the builder. All of them ship code the page does not strictly need. Measure it before you buy. | Hand-written HTML and CSS, no builder layer. Our homepage scored 99 out of 100 on Google's mobile speed test on 15 September 2026. Check it now. |
| Who owns it | Split. WordPress you own outright, because it is free to download and open source and runs on your own hosting. WordPress, read 15 September 2026. Hosted builders run on their platform and their terms. | The site is yours once it is paid for, files and all. Your domain is in your name from day one. |
| Monthly cost model | A subscription either way. Squarespace names its plans Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced. Squarespace, read 15 September 2026. Elementor Pro is billed annually across Essential, Advanced Solo, Advanced and Expert. Elementor, read 15 September 2026. GoDaddy publishes its own on its UK site. | Nothing a month at the sale. Hosting is pennies and changes are paid for when you ask for them. |
| Local pages per town | Duplicate a page and edit it, over and over. Workable at three towns and a chore at ten, and they drift apart the first time a service changes. | Every town gets its own page with its own content, built from one structure. Change a service once and all of them follow. |
| Quote tool | A contact form comes as standard and add-ons go further, at another subscription. A flow built around one trade is not what any of them are for. | A real enquiry flow for your trade: service, urgency, property type, postcode. The lead lands qualified rather than as three words and a phone number. |
| Who builds it | You, or somebody you pay by the hour to drive the builder for you. Both are fine. Both are time or money that is not going on the van. | We do. You send the firm name, the areas and your own job photos, and we write the pages around your trade. |
| Time to live | An afternoon for a holding page. Weeks, realistically, for something with real photos, real copy and a page for every town you cover. | Seven days from sign off to live and taking enquiries. The demo comes before that, and it costs you nothing. |
| Moving away later | WordPress moves, because the files and the database are yours. Hosted builders are a rebuild, so read the exit terms before you start, not after. | Take the files to any host in the country. Nothing to unpick and nobody whose permission you need. |
Plan names and billing terms from squarespace.com/pricing and elementor.com, and the free and open source statement from the WordPress download page, all read on 15 September 2026. GoDaddy publishes its Website Builder plans on its UK site. We do not reproduce prices here because they vary by country and by term. Our speed figure is Google's mobile test on our own homepage, 15 September 2026, and you can re-run it.
Who each one actually suits
The verdict
A builder if you will drive it yourself. Custom if you would rather be on the tools.
A page builder suits you if
- You want to change a price or add a service yourself, tonight, without asking anyone.
- You cover a handful of towns and you are not fighting for every local search.
- You already have somebody in the family who keeps it updated.
- With WordPress, you want to own the install and you are happy maintaining it.
It starts to cost you when
- The evenings you spend in the editor are evenings you are not quoting.
- Ten town pages have drifted apart and none of them are current.
- The plugin bill and the plan add up to more than you expected.
- The mobile speed score is the reason people leave before they call.
The deciding question is not which tool is better. It is whether you are going to be the person who maintains it. If yes, a builder is a fair deal and WordPress is the one that leaves you the most room. If no, a maintained site somebody else keeps current will out-earn a builder you stopped touching in March.
Five things firms ask us about builders
Squarespace, GoDaddy or WordPress with Elementor. Which is best for a trade?
They are closer to each other than any of them is to a hand-built site. Squarespace gives you the best-looking defaults. GoDaddy is the quickest to get something live. WordPress with Elementor gives you the most control and the most to maintain. Pick on which one you will actually keep updated, because an out of date site beats none and a maintained one beats both.
Is WordPress free?
The WordPress software is free to download and open source, and its own download page splits the choice into installing it yourself on your own hosting and domain, or setting it up through a hosting provider. What costs money is the hosting, the theme, the plugins and somebody keeping all of it updated. We read that page on 15 September 2026.
Do page builder sites load slowly?
Not always, and it depends far more on the theme, the plugins and the images than on the builder itself. The honest version is that a builder adds code to the page that your site does not strictly need, and that code costs you on a phone on mobile data. Test it. Run your own site and two you admire through Google PageSpeed Insights and compare the mobile scores.
Can I take a builder site with me if I change firms?
WordPress you can, because you own the install and the files, which is a real point in its favour. Hosted builders vary and the answer is in their terms, so read them before you commit. Whoever you use, the domain is the part that matters most, so make sure it is registered in your name and you can log into the account.
What do you do that a builder cannot?
Write the pages for one trade in one area. Build a town page for every place you cover. Put a real enquiry flow in front of the customer, one that asks the five things you need before you quote. Then hand you the files. You see all of it working on a live demo before you pay anything.
We build your site first, put it on a real address and send you the link. No deposit, no contract to read, nothing monthly at the sale. Whatever you are on now stays up until you say otherwise.
- Free live demo. We build your site first and put it on a real address. You open it on your phone before any money changes hands.
- Keep your domain. Your domain stays in your name. So does the site once it is paid for.
- Live in 7 days. Seven days from sign off to a site that is live and taking enquiries.
- One firm per area. We build for one firm per trade per area. When an area is claimed it is gone.
Our own homepage scored 99 out of 100 on Google's mobile speed test, measured on 15 September 2026. Run the test yourself.
