What is a conversion?

It is a visitor doing the thing you wanted, which for a trade is nearly always ringing or asking for a price.

A conversion is simply a visitor doing the thing the page was built to make happen. For a trade that means tapping the phone number, sending a WhatsApp, or completing the quote form. Everything else on the site exists to make one of those three more likely.

Why visitor numbers alone mean nothing

A site with two hundred visitors a month and twelve enquiries is doing better than a site with two thousand visitors and five. The second one has a traffic problem that looks like success and a conversion problem nobody has noticed.

Work out the rate: enquiries divided by visitors. Follow that number rather than the visitor count, because it is the one that tracks work.

A worked example

Two paving firms, same town. One gets six hundred visitors a month and nine enquiries. The other gets a hundred and forty visitors and eleven. That is a rate of one and a half per cent against nearly eight.

The first firm spent the year trying to get more visitors. The second one gets more work from a fifth of the traffic. Until you divide one number by the other, the first site looks like the one that is winning.

What lifts it

Speed, so people are still there. Proof, so they believe you. A tappable number, so acting takes one thumb. One clear next step per page. A form that asks the right few questions. None of it is clever, and all of it compounds.

Why it matters for your site

Check these on your own site

  • Count enquiries against visitors, not visitors on their own.
  • Make sure your phone number is a tappable link on every page.
  • Fix the page before you buy more traffic. More visitors to a page that does not convert just costs more.
  • Count calls as well as form fills, or you will undercount badly in a trade.
  • Small changes near the top of the page usually move this more than a redesign does.

Common questions

What counts as a conversion for a trade website?

A tap on the phone number, a WhatsApp message, or a completed quote form. Anything that puts a real enquiry in front of you.

What is a good conversion rate for a trade site?

It varies far too much by trade, town and search to quote a single figure honestly. Measure your own, then work on beating it.
