Web hosting is where your website actually lives. A computer somewhere, switched on all the time, holding your pages and photos and handing them over when somebody opens your address. If the domain is the address, the hosting is the building it points at.
Why it decides how fast your site feels
Hosting is the first link in the chain. A visitor taps your listing, their phone asks your host for the page, and nothing at all appears until the host answers. On a cheap shared plan your site can be sharing one machine with hundreds of others, so the answer comes back slowly at the exact moment somebody is standing in their garden looking at a burst pipe.
The other half is where the host is. A server answering from the other side of the world adds time to every single request, on every page, for every visitor.
A worked example
A drainage firm in Stoke had a site on a bargain shared plan bundled in with a builder tool. On a phone on 4G it took about six seconds before anything useful appeared. Nothing on the page was wrong. The pages were simply arriving slowly.
