Our own total of the Valuation Office stock table CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025, across the twelve Stevenage census areas is 38,430 properties. 760 of them, 2.0 per cent, were built before 1919 and 1,160, 3.0 per cent, before 1940, with 55.2 per cent between 1945 and 1972 and 13.9 per cent from 2000 onwards. The published Stevenage row in the same table carries the same 38,430 properties.
Census 2021 table TS044 records 46.1 per cent of Stevenage households in terraced houses, 20.1 per cent in purpose built flats, 19.5 per cent semi detached and 11.9 per cent detached. TS054 records 26.3 per cent in social rented housing and 13.7 per cent renting from a private landlord or letting agency.

Stevenage has seven conservation areas: Broadwater, Old Town High Street, Orchard Road, Shephall Green, Symonds Green, Town Square, and St Nicholas and Rectory Lane. Each has its own Conservation Area Management Plan supplementary planning document. The council's tree page asks you to contact it "to ensure that the trees are not protected by a Tree Preservation Order, planning constraints or that the tree is within a Conservation area", and points to the Planning Portal for consent under an order.
The council does not state the notice period on its own pages. Nationally, gov.uk describes the requirement for "people to notify the local planning authority, using a section 211 notice, 6 weeks before carrying out certain work on such trees, unless an exception applies", and says the work may go ahead sooner where the authority gives consent. The same guidance states that consent "is needed for carrying out work on diseased and/or dying trees unless some other exemption applies".
On felling, the Forestry Commission states that a licence is needed to fell more than 5 cubic metres in a calendar quarter where the trees are over the diameters it names, 8cm over bark measured at 1.3m above ground, or 15cm for coppice or underwood, and that "You can sell up to 2 of the 5 cubic metres per calendar quarter. If you sell more then you will require a licence." It lists further exceptions, including work to prevent danger or nuisance. Licences are free in England.

We counted the Google Maps results for tree surgeons in Stevenage on 16 September 2026. The sample was 40 listings. Seven of them are tree firms with a Stevenage address, five of those seven have a website and two have none. Fifteen of the 40 are not tree firms at all: gardeners, landscapers, a drainage firm, a fencing firm, a van and clearance service, a dental clinic, a pub and a restaurant, each carrying the word tree in the name or the category. One is a national arboriculture firm, counted separately, and the other seventeen are tree firms based outside the town.
That is one dated sample of one search. What we would do with it is give the Old Town, Shephall, Symonds Green, St Nicholas and Bedwell a page each, with a conservation areas page naming all seven.
Two Stevenage firms appeared in the first ten Google local listings we checked for "tree surgeons in Stevenage", with sites worth opening. The Stevenage site we opened puts both numbers and the words "Call or Message on" at the very top, then names each job in a plain sentence.
