The published Valuation Office stock table CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025, records 166,780 properties in Cardiff. 39,750 of them were built before 1919, which is 23.8 per cent, and 60,870 before 1940, which is 36.5 per cent. 22.4 per cent went up between 1945 and 1972, 21.0 per cent between 1973 and 1999, and 33,470, which is 20.1 per cent, in 2000 or later.

Census 2021 table TS044 records 29.7 per cent of Cardiff households in semi detached houses, 29.6 per cent terraced, 14.1 per cent detached and 25.2 per cent in purpose built or converted flats combined. Both sets are the published local authority row and cover the whole authority. Neither identifies boundary lengths or where fencing work falls within the city.

Old St Mellons is a conservation area in Pontprennau and Old St Mellons ward. 20.1 per cent of the authority was built in 2000 or later (Cardiff Council and VOA CTSOP4.1).

The rules that change a fencing job in Cardiff

Cardiff Council's own page states "Cardiff has 27 conservation areas that have been designated for their special architectural or historic interest", and "Many areas also have Article 4 Directions, which give additional controls over various minor alterations, such as alterations to windows". The conservation areas it names include Cathedral Road, Roath Park, Rhiwbina Garden Village, Llandaff, Church Road in Whitchurch, Old St Mellons, Mount Stuart Square and Tredegarville.

Cardiff is in Wales, so the Welsh Government's guidance governs here rather than the English Planning Portal. It says planning permission is needed for a fence, wall or gate "over 1 metre high and next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway)" or "over 2 metres high elsewhere". It is also needed if "the fence, wall or gate, or any other boundary involved, is in the curtilage of a listed building", or if "your right to put up or alter fences, walls and gates is removed by an article 4 direction or a planning condition".

On taking one down, the Welsh guidance says you do not need permission to remove or alter an existing fence, wall or gate without increasing its height, but that "in a conservation area, however, you might need conservation area consent to take down a fence, wall or gate". It describes Article 4 directions as "most common in conservation areas where the character of an area could be threatened by unmanaged development".

Who you are up against in Cardiff

We counted the Google Maps results for fencing contractors in Cardiff on 16 September 2026. The sample was 19 fencing, landscaping or carpentry firms with a Cardiff address: 15 had a website and four had none. One more row was a Cardiff building materials merchant and two were fencing clubs, the sport rather than the trade. Seven rows showed no address, and 11 firms were addressed elsewhere, in Barry, Penarth, Caerphilly, Newport and the West Midlands.

That is one dated sample of one Cardiff search. What we would do with it is give Roath, Riverside, Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Old St Mellons a page each, carrying the work you have finished in them.

    Built on WordPress. It carries photographs of its own jobs. It has no reviews on the page. Quotes come through a form.

    The page carries an areas covered section and offers a free video estimate over FaceTime, WhatsApp or Zoom.

Two keep the phone number in the header, one carries reviews on the page, and none of the two we could check run a page per area. Each one opened and checked 16 September 2026.
