Our own total over the fifteen named Gloucester city areas is 60,120 properties (VOA CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025). 10,780 predate 1919, which is 17.9 per cent, and 16,480 predate 1940, which is 27.4 per cent. 17,560, which is 29.2 per cent, went up between 1973 and 1999, and 12,940, which is 21.5 per cent, in 2000 or later. The published city row holds the same 60,120 properties.

Census 2021 table TS044 records 39.6 per cent of Gloucester households in semi detached houses, 21.0 per cent detached, 20.7 per cent terraced and 16.8 per cent in purpose built or converted flats. Those figures describe accommodation type and property age. They do not record garden size or the condition of a boundary.

Both are named in the council's Article 4 directions, which apply to specified properties and, the council says, "only apply to those parts of the building which front a highway or open space". "In total the Council has adopted 14 Conservation Areas in Gloucester" (Gloucester City Council).

The rules that change a fencing job in Gloucester

Gloucester City Council's Article 4 direction for St Michael's Square covers "All dwellings in St Michaels Square which have not been converted into flats, including numbers 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 Brunswick Road", and requires planning consent for "The erection, construction, maintenance, improvement or alteration of a gate, fence, wall or other means of enclosure" and for "The demolition in whole or in part of any gate, fence, wall or other means of enclosure". The direction for the Southgate Street conservation area repeats that wording at a listed set of addresses in Albion Street, Somerset Place, Southgate Street and Stroud Road. For both, the council says "The direction will only apply to those parts of the building which front a highway or open space".

The Planning Portal sets the national rule behind every Gloucester job. It says you will not need to apply for planning permission to erect a new, or alter, maintain, improve or take down an existing fence, wall or gate if all of its conditions are met, among them that it is "next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway) and it would not exceed one metre in height (from ground level)", or that "it would not exceed two metres in height (from ground level) if elsewhere". Where a Gloucester boundary already exceeds those limits, the condition is that "its height would not be increased".

Those same conditions require, at a Gloucester address, that "no part of the site is a listed building or within the curtilage of a listed building" and that "the right to put up or alter fences, walls and gates has not been removed by an article four direction or a planning condition". The council also states "In total the Council has adopted 14 Conservation Areas in Gloucester".

We counted the Google Maps results for fencing contractors in Gloucester on 16 September 2026. The sample was 13 fencing or landscaping firms with a Gloucester city address: 11 had a website and two had none. Two more rows were Gloucester timber and fencing supply merchants and one was a branch listing of a national fencing franchise. Eight rows showed no address, and 16 firms were addressed outside the city, in wider Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and the West Midlands.
