The houses in Chippenham

Our own total over the four Chippenham census areas, Chippenham North, West, South & East and Pewsham, is 16,510 properties (VOA CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025). 21 per cent were built before 1940, 21 per cent between 1945 and 1972, 42 per cent between 1973 and 1999 and 15.9 per cent in 2000 or later. Chippenham Pewsham is 72 per cent built between 1973 and 1999 on its own. That is our own total over the named Chippenham areas, not a published town row.

The published Wiltshire row records 233,060 properties, 26.1 per cent of them built before 1940 and 22.4 per cent since 2000. Census 2021 table TS044 records Wiltshire at 35.2 per cent detached, 31.8 per cent semi detached, 20.7 per cent terraced and 10.1 per cent in purpose built or converted flats. Those figures record accommodation type and property age and nothing about a boundary.

We would build a page for each of the four areas, each carrying its own figures and your finished runs, gates and decks there.

Pewsham

2,960 properties, 72 per cent built between 1973 and 1999 (Valuation Office stock tables, 2025). Census 2021 records 35.8 per cent detached and 30.9 per cent terraced.

Chippenham South & East

The rules that change a fencing job in Chippenham

Wiltshire Council's own published conservation areas layer holds 244 conservation area records for the county, one of which is named Chippenham, reference CA/N/51. The council's open data description states that "the local planning authority have a statutory duty to designate and manage conservation areas under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990", and defines a conservation area as "an area of special architectural or historic interest where the original appearance is preserved or enhanced".

The Planning Portal sets the national rule behind every Chippenham job. It says you will not need to apply for planning permission to erect a new, or alter, maintain, improve or take down an existing fence, wall or gate if all of its conditions are met, among them that it is "next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway) and it would not exceed one metre in height (from ground level)", or that "it would not exceed two metres in height (from ground level) if elsewhere". Where a Chippenham boundary already exceeds those limits, the condition is that "its height would not be increased".

Those same conditions require, at a Chippenham address, that "no part of the site is a listed building or within the curtilage of a listed building" and that "the right to put up or alter fences, walls and gates has not been removed by an article four direction or a planning condition". The Planning Portal adds that in a Chippenham conservation area "you might need permission take down a fence, wall or gate".

In Chippenham we would explain how you check the conservation boundary, any Article 4 direction and the proposed work before confirming whether permission is needed.

Who you are up against in Chippenham

We counted the Google Maps results for fencing contractors in Chippenham on 16 September 2026. The sample was six fencing firms with a Chippenham postal address: five had their own website and one had none. The rest of the pull held six local merchants and suppliers including a fencing supply store and a timber yard, five out of county merchant branches, 13 other local trades, two Bristol fencing firms, one Wiltshire fencing firm outside the town, and seven listings with no address at all.

That is one dated sample of one Chippenham search. What we would do with it is give Pewsham, Chippenham North, Chippenham West and Chippenham South & East a page each, carrying the runs and gates you have finished in them.

Where a fencing firm in Chippenham gets to when they invest

One Chippenham firm appeared in the first ten Google local listings we checked for "fencing contractors in Chippenham", with a site worth opening. Two of the firms the search returned publish an address outside the town, at Yatton Keynell and in Cold Ashton parish, so one card stands here rather than three.

  • "fence repairs Chippenham"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

Queried and no row came back. The Chippenham repairs page still gets built, with the photo upload on it.

Of the six Chippenham phrases shown, four carry a recorded monthly volume. Garden gates Chippenham and fence repairs Chippenham do not.

Fencing contractors in Chippenham ask us

  • Is Chippenham one fencing market or several?

Several, going by the housing. VOA CTSOP4.1 records 72 per cent of Chippenham Pewsham properties as built between 1973 and 1999, while 38.5 per cent in Chippenham North predate 1940. Those figures describe housing age across the two areas. The area pages would carry them and your own completed local projects.

  • Does the conservation area change how I quote?

It adds a check before you quote. Wiltshire Council's conservation areas layer records an area named Chippenham, reference CA/N/51, and Planning Portal guidance makes permitted development conditional on the relevant rights remaining in place. The page would explain how you check the address, the proposed work and any Article 4 direction or planning condition.

  • How many real Chippenham competitors are there online?

The Chippenham pull on 16 September 2026 returned 40 listings. Six were classified as fencing firms with Chippenham postal addresses, five of them with their own websites. The rest included merchants, other trades, three fencing firms outside the town and seven listings without addresses. Those are recorded postal address categories on one date.
