The Dewsbury town centre conservation area appraisal records views from the surrounding hills taking in roofscapes of consistent slate roofs, and lists the use of inappropriate roof materials among the things that have harmed the historic townscape. Kirklees has 60 conservation areas and Dewsbury Town Centre is number 29 on the council's list, designated in March 1981. The appraisal covers almost 11 hectares and about 280 pre 1939 buildings, 57 of them listed.
The council's Dewsbury conservation area guidance of May 2020 states that inside the area, cladding, inserting dormer windows, raising the ridge or expanding the size of a roof, and satellite dishes on walls, roofs or chimneys fronting a highway are all taken out of permitted development.
The draft appraisal recommends an Article 4 direction over the whole conservation area covering roof shape, cladding and materials. We found no confirmation that the direction has been made, and we would not state on a client's site that it has.

We counted the Google Maps results for roofers in Dewsbury on 16 September 2026. The sample was 40 listings: 35 had a website and 5 had none. None of the 40 carried Dewsbury in its web address, and the sample returned firms based in Morley, Birstall and Stoke on Trent, plus a South Yorkshire site with a page for Chickenley.
That is one dated sample of one search. What we would do with it is put Dewsbury in the page title and heading, and give the town centre, Batley and Mirfield a page each, carrying the jobs you have done in them.
