The houses in Stockport

Valuation Office stock table CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025, covers 133,540 Stockport dwellings. 19.3% were built before 1919 and 42.0% before 1945. 34.4% date from 1945 to 1972 and 7.9% from 2000 or later. The borough figure is the published local authority total, and the district lines further down are our own totals of the same table over the census areas that make each district up.

Census 2021 table TS044 records 41.2% semi detached, 21.6% detached, 20.9% terraced and 13.2% purpose built flats. On our totals Edgeley is 69.0% built before 1900 and 71.8% before 1945, Heaton Moor is 22.9% pre 1919, Heaton Mersey 20.6% pre 1919, and Bramhall 41.9% built between 1945 and 1972 with 4.5% pre 1919.

Two kinds of roof sit behind those figures: slate with valleys and chimney work on the Victorian suburbs, and concrete tile across the inter war and post war semis. We would give each its own page, with the jobs you have taken in Edgeley, the Heatons and Bramhall named and photographed.

Edgeley

69.0 per cent of dwellings built before 1900 and 71.8 per cent before 1945 (Valuation Office stock tables, 2025). Alexandra Park Edgeley is a conservation area with an Article 4(2) Direction.

Victorian terrace slate, shared valleys and party wall work, chimney stacks. Tight streets and on street parking decide how long the scaffold stays up.

Heaton Moor

22.9 per cent pre 1919 and 39.4 per cent pre 1945 (Valuation Office stock tables, 2025). Conservation area designated 1 January 1973, with an Article 4(2) Direction.

Large Victorian and Edwardian houses. Slate re roofs, multiple valleys, decorative ridge, lead flashing to bays and stacks. Photographs and a written guarantee sell this one.

Heaton Mersey

20.6 per cent pre 1919, 16.6 per cent from the 1930s and 36.4 per cent from 1973 to 1999 (Valuation Office stock tables, 2025). Conservation area with an Article 4(2) Direction.

Mixed slate and tile, plus 1970s to 1990s stock now on its second roof and rear extension flat roofs.

Bramhall

41.9 per cent built 1945 to 1972 and 16.4 per cent from the 1930s, only 4.5 per cent pre 1919 (Valuation Office stock tables, 2025). Bramhall Park and Bramhall Lane South both carry Article 4(2) Directions.

Tile roofs on larger semis and detached houses, garden room and extension flat roofs, and the higher value full re roof.

Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme

Cheadle Village, Brooklyn Crescent and Hulme Hall Road, Swann Lane and Hill Top Avenue all carry Article 4(1) and 4(2) Directions (Stockport Council).

Conservation area repair work where permitted development rights have been removed. The page would explain which jobs need permission and say that you check the address first.

The rules that change a roofing job in Stockport

Stockport Council lists 37 conservation areas. Twenty four of them carry an Article 4 Direction, among them Alexandra Park, Heaton Moor, Heaton Mersey, Bramhall Park, Bramhall Lane South, Cale Green, Davenport Park, Hillgate, Cheadle Village and Mauldeth Road, and six carry both an Article 4(1) and an Article 4(2).

The council states that inside a conservation area there are extra planning controls over demolition and minor development.

We would build a page that lists those areas, explains which jobs need permission, and says that you check the address against the conservation area boundary and against any Article 4 direction before you quote.

Who you are up against in Stockport

We counted the Google Maps results for roofers in Stockport on 16 September 2026. The sample was 40 listings: 36 had a website and 4 had none. Some of the 36 are Manchester wide or national rather than Stockport based, including Millbrook, Alpine and a firm from Blackpool, and one listing is a merchant depot at Burton Roofing.

That is one dated sample of one search. What we would do with it is give Edgeley, Heaton Moor, Heaton Mersey, Bramhall and Cheadle a page each, carrying your finished work in them.

Three Stockport firms appeared in the first ten Google local listings we checked for "roofers in Stockport", with sites worth opening. Elliott Roofing, LMP Roofing and P Douglas Roofing and Building each run area pages for the Stockport suburbs by name and keep a number at the top of every page.

All three keep the phone number in the header, both of the two we could check carry reviews on the page, and all three run a page per area. Each one opened and checked 17 September 2026.
