The published Valuation Office stock table CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025, records 128,820 dwellings in Bolton. Totalling its build period columns ourselves, 32,660 were built before 1919, which is 25.4%, and 20,150 between 1919 and 1939. That is 52,810 dwellings, or 41.0%, before 1940. 30,520 (23.7%) went up between 1945 and 1972, 13,840 (10.7%) between 1973 and 1982 and 31,090 (24.1%) since 1983.

Horwich and Blackrod ward is 34.1% terraced, 33.5% semi detached and 22.9% detached at Census 2021, and Horwich North East is 23.0% detached. The council lists a Horwich town centre conservation area appraisal, a Horwich locomotive works management plan and Wallsuches.

Bromley Cross ward is 37.2% detached at Census 2021. Egerton, Dunscar Fold and Bradshaw Chapel are all on the council's conservation area list.

Bolton Council's conservation area downloads page lists 26 conservation area appraisals and management plans, including Chorley New Road, Barrow Bridge, Bank Top, Eagley Bank, Egerton, Dunscar Fold, Bradshaw Chapel, Firwood Fold, Deane Village, Queens Park, Horwich town centre, Horwich locomotive works, Wallsuches and Westhoughton.
The council says there is only currently one conservation area with an Article 4 direction and that it is Barrow Bridge. Across the rest of the borough, including the detached stock at Heaton, Lostock and Bromley Cross, the standard householder permitted development route is still open on that wording, and the constraint inside a conservation area is design and materials rather than lost rights.

We pulled the Google Maps results for builders in Bolton on 16 September 2026. The 40 place pull carries a long tail of merchants, timber yards and out of area firms, four of them as far off as Frome, Motherwell, Glasgow and Coleraine. Of the 25 local building firms left, 23 already had a site and 2 had none.
