Wakefield Council lists 31 conservation areas across the district, among them Cathedral, Wood Street, South Parade, Wentworth Terrace, the Waterfront, St Johns, Horbury, Ossett, Normanton, Castleford, Knottingley, Pontefract Market Place and Sandal Castle.
The same council pages put Article 4 directions in force in three places, Heath, St Johns and Whitwood Terrace, and at 28 Blenheim Road in Wakefield.
Separately, the Wakefield District Design Code Supplementary Planning Document was adopted on 16 June 2026. In the council's own words it "replaces the Residential Design Guide and the Street Design Guide Supplementary Planning Documents and masterplanning guidance". The council states that it is a material consideration on planning applications and that it applies at householder scale.
