Our own totals of the Valuation Office table CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025, cover 13,570 dwellings across the three census areas that make up Selby town (Selby Town, Selby West, and Selby South, Brayton and Barlow). 15.0 per cent predate 1919 and 23.4 per cent predate 1940. Across the ten census areas of the former Selby district there are 42,240 properties, of which 30.6 per cent were built between 1973 and 1999 and 25.6 per cent in 2000 or later.
The published North Yorkshire row in the same table records 306,270 properties, 80,600 of them, 26.3 per cent, built before 1919. The three Selby town areas we totalled come to 15.0 per cent pre 1919, under the county figure. Census 2021 table TS044 puts 33.8 per cent of North Yorkshire households in detached houses, 32.3 per cent in semis and 20.7 per cent in terraces.
Census 2021 table TS054 records 15.3 per cent of North Yorkshire households renting privately, with Selby Town at 22.5 per cent, Selby West at 8.8 per cent, Selby South, Brayton and Barlow at 6.9 per cent and Barlby and Riccall at 9.7 per cent. The town centre is the old and rented part, the villages are newer and owner occupied, and the first question either of them asks is whether you come out that far. We would show your completed bathroom and boiler jobs and explain how you assess what is there.
