The houses in Castleford

Our own totals over the five named Castleford areas record 20,010 properties, 4,440 built before 1919, which is 22.2 per cent, and 7,840 before 1940, which is 39.2 per cent (VOA CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025). The published Wakefield local authority row beside them records 165,130 properties at 15.4 per cent before 1919 and 30.9 per cent before 1940, and Castleford is one town inside that district. Castleford Town is 58.3 per cent pre 1919 and Airedale 0.9 per cent, with Ferry Fryston 66.7 per cent built between 1945 and 1972.

Census 2021 records the Wakefield authority at 13.0 per cent of households renting from a private landlord or letting agency and 21.7 per cent renting socially. Inside the town the tables read area by area: Castleford Town records 24.2 per cent renting privately and 60.9 per cent in terraced houses, Ferry Fryston 41.9 per cent renting socially and 69.2 per cent in semi detached houses, and Glasshoughton 38.3 per cent owning with a mortgage.

That is a town with two halves to photograph. We would build a terraces page for the centre and a post war semis page for Airedale and Ferry Fryston, each with your own finished rooms on it.

The rules that change a painting and decorating job in Castleford

Wakefield Council states that there are 31 conservation areas in the Wakefield district, Castleford among them, and that Article 4 Directions apply in three of them, Heath, St Johns and Whitwood Terrace, with the properties covered set out in a separate document. The council's conservation areas page says the character of an area may include buildings, the spaces between buildings, views, paving materials, and trees and boundary features. It does not state a rule about painting.

Behind the council sits the Planning Portal, which a Castleford customer usually reads first: it states that "You do not need to apply for planning permission for repairs, maintenance or minor improvements, such as painting your house", and that in a Conservation Area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or the Broads "you will need to apply for planning permission before cladding the outside of your house with stone, artificial stone, pebble dash, render, timber, plastic or tiles". It adds that "If you live in a listed building, you will need listed building consent for any significant works whether internal or external".

On old paintwork, HSE states that lead pigments "were widely used in paints for homes, schools, offices etc until the 1960s" and that lead "was not removed from all commonly used paint until the early 1980s". Its named controls include "leaving in place paintwork that is in good condition and / or covered by non-leaded paint", and it says "Do not over heat leaded paint by using blow lamps or gas torches". The guidance describes the paintwork it applies to and does not attach that description to any particular property.

We would explain how you check the conservation boundary, any Article 4 Direction, the listed building position and the proposed work with Wakefield Council before confirming whether permission is needed.

Who you are up against in Castleford

We counted the Google Maps results for painters and decorators in Castleford on 16 September 2026. Seventeen listings carried a Castleford address and twelve of those are decorating firms: 5 had a website on their own domain and 7 had none, counting two whose listing links to a Facebook page and two that link to a third party directory. Three of the remaining in town rows are paint and decorating merchants and two are vehicle paint businesses.

That is one dated sample of one search. What we would do with it is give Castleford Town, Glasshoughton, Castleford West, Airedale and Ferry Fryston a page each, carrying the jobs you have finished in them.

Where a decorating firm in Castleford gets to when they invest

Two Castleford firms appeared in the first ten Google local listings we checked for "painters and decorators in Castleford", with sites worth opening. One of the two prints its Castleford street address in the footer and names the town in the page title and the first heading.

  • Elmbrooke Painters and Decorators

Built on WordPress. It carries reviews on the page. It has no page per area. Quotes come through a form.

The home page prints named customer reviews with five star ratings beside them, and the header carries a Get Quote button.

  • Lick Painting & Decorating

A custom site built by an agency. It has no page per area. Quotes come through a form.

The page title and the first heading both name Castleford alongside Leeds, Wakefield and Pontefract, and the Castleford street address is printed in the footer.

The one site we could check does not keep the phone number in the header, the one site we could check carries reviews on the page, and none run a page per area. Each one opened and checked 17 September 2026.

The Castleford searches worth their own page

  • "painters and decorators Castleford"

40 searches a month (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

The town page. It names the areas you work in and shows a finished room in each.

  • "decorators Castleford"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

No row came back for the short phrase. The town page still answers it and routes into interiors and exteriors.

  • "painter and decorator Castleford"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

The keyword tool returned no row for the singular wording. The page carries it anyway, with your name and your face on it.

  • "house painters Castleford"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

No row for this one. The exteriors page and the interiors page both carry the wording.

  • "commercial decorators Castleford"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

Nothing recorded for the phrase. A commercial page still gets built, with out of hours working and public liability cover on it.

Of the five phrases shown, one carries a volume. Decorators Castleford, painter and decorator Castleford, house painters Castleford and commercial decorators Castleford each returned no row from the keyword tool (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026).

What we would build for a Castleford decorating firm

  • A home page naming Castleford Town, Glasshoughton, Castleford West, Airedale and Ferry Fryston.
  • A terraces page for Castleford Town, with the preparation in the pictures as well as the finished room.
  • A post war semis page for Airedale and Ferry Fryston, room by room.
  • An exteriors page for the render, soffits and woodwork at Castleford West.
  • A landlord and between tenancy page for the Castleford Town rentals.
  • A page on the Castleford conservation area and the three Article 4 Directions in the district.
  • Area pages for Castleford Town, Glasshoughton, Castleford West, Airedale, Ferry Fryston and Whitwood.
  • A quote tool that asks interior or exterior, how many rooms, and whether the house is occupied or empty.

What every painting and decorating site needs, whatever the town, is on our painters and decorators page.

Painters and decorators in Castleford ask us

  • Nearly two thirds of the town centre predates 1940. Does that change the rules?

It does not. Our own totals of the Valuation Office table record 63.4 per cent of Castleford Town as built before 1940 and 58.3 per cent before 1919, which is housing age. The Planning Portal states painting a house needs no planning permission, while cladding or rendering in a conservation area does, and Wakefield Council names Castleford among its 31.

  • Is Castleford big enough for a page of its own?

OpenSEO recorded 40 monthly searches for painters and decorators Castleford in September 2026, and the other seven phrases queried returned no row. The Maps pull the same week returned twelve decorating firms with a Castleford address, five with a website of their own. Those figures describe the samples returned rather than the full market.

  • Should the page speak to landlords as well as homeowners?

Census 2021 records 24.2 per cent of Castleford Town households renting from a private landlord or letting agency, against 41.9 per cent renting socially in Ferry Fryston and 5.4 per cent renting socially in Glasshoughton. Those are separate area figures. A page can address each kind of customer in its own words, with the booking route on it.
