The houses in Normanton

Our own totals over the two named Normanton areas record 8,290 properties, 1,560 built before 1919, which is 18.8 per cent, and 2,440 before 1940, which is 29.4 per cent (VOA CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025). The published Wakefield local authority row beside them records 165,130 properties at 15.4 per cent before 1919 and 30.9 per cent before 1940. The two areas are Normanton East and Normanton West: Altofts adjoins the town, is its own area and is left out of these totals.

Normanton West is 20.3 per cent pre 1919 with 35.2 per cent built between 1945 and 1972, and Normanton East 16.8 per cent pre 1919 with 35.9 per cent built between 1973 and 1999 and 26.3 per cent from 2000 onwards. Census 2021 records Normanton East at 68.1 per cent owner occupied with 13.4 per cent renting from a private landlord or letting agency, and Normanton West at 51.6 per cent owner occupied with 31.2 per cent renting socially. Terraced houses account for 31.2 per cent of households in Normanton West and 28.8 per cent in Normanton East, against 22.0 per cent across Wakefield (Census 2021 table TS044).

Old stock at one end of the town and new at the other. We would build a terraces page for Normanton West and a newer estates page for Normanton East, each with your own finished rooms rather than a stock photograph.

Normanton West

20.3 per cent of the properties were built before 1919 and 33.3 per cent before 1940, with 35.2 per cent built between 1945 and 1972, 31.2 per cent of households in terraced houses and 31.2 per cent renting socially (VOA CTSOP4.1, 2025; Census 2021 TS044 and TS054).

Normanton East

The Normanton conservation area

Normanton is one of the 31 conservation areas Wakefield Council names in its district list, and the council says designation brings control over demolition, strengthened controls over minor development and special provision for the protection of trees (Wakefield Council).

The rules that change a painting and decorating job in Normanton

Wakefield Council states "There are currently 31 of these in our district" of its conservation areas, Normanton among the names on that list, and that designation "brings with it a number of controls including: control over the demolition of buildings, strengthened controls over minor development, special provision for the protection of trees".

On listed buildings the council states that "Wakefield district has over 700 Listed Buildings", that listed building consent is needed to "alter or extend it in a way that affects its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest", and, in its own words, that "Even relatively minor works, such as painting, may affect the character of a listed building so you should always contact the Conservation Team prior to starting any works".

The national wording for an ordinary Normanton house is the Planning Portal's: "You do not need to apply for planning permission for repairs, maintenance or minor improvements, such as painting your house", while in a Conservation Area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or the Broads "you will need to apply for planning permission before cladding the outside of your house with stone, artificial stone, pebble dash, render, timber, plastic or tiles". The Portal states as well that "If you live in a listed building, you will need listed building consent for any significant works whether internal or external".

We would explain how you check the conservation boundary, any Article 4 direction, the listed building position and the proposed work with the Wakefield Council Conservation Team before confirming whether permission is needed.

Who you are up against in Normanton

We counted the Google Maps results for painters and decorators in Normanton on 17 September 2026. The sample was 8 listings carrying a Normanton postal town in a painting or decorating category: 3 had a website and 5 had none, and two of the eight are separate listings under the same firm name at different postcodes. Two further Normanton rows carried other categories, a kitchen remodeller and a handyman service, and no merchants and no national chain branches carried a Normanton address in the pull.

That is one dated sample of one search. What we would do with it is give Normanton West, Normanton East and the streets around the conservation area a page each, carrying the jobs you have finished in them.

The Normanton searches worth their own page

  • "painters and decorators Normanton"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

The keyword tool returned no row for the phrase. The town page still gets built, naming the areas you work in.

  • "decorators Normanton"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

Nothing recorded for the short phrase. It sits on the same page, with the services list under it.

  • "painter and decorator Normanton"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

No row for the singular wording. The page carries it anyway, with your name, your face and your finished work.

  • "house painters Normanton"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

No row here either. The interiors page and the exteriors page both carry the wording.

  • "commercial decorators Normanton"

no recorded monthly volume (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026)

Nothing recorded. A commercial page is still worth building, with out of hours working and public liability cover on it.

Of the five phrases shown, none carries a volume: painters and decorators Normanton, decorators Normanton, painter and decorator Normanton, house painters Normanton and commercial decorators Normanton each returned no row from the keyword tool (OpenSEO keyword data, September 2026).

What we would build for a Normanton decorating firm

  • A home page naming Normanton West, Normanton East and the streets around the conservation area.
  • A terraces page for Normanton West, with the preparation in the pictures as well as the finished room.
  • A newer estates page for Normanton East, with the paint systems named.
  • An exteriors page for the woodwork and render, showing the preparation and how you assess the job.
  • A social landlord and contract page for the Normanton West rented stock.
  • A conservation and listed buildings page quoting the council on minor works and the Conservation Team route.
  • Area pages for Normanton West, Normanton East, Normanton Common, Loscoe and Woodhouse.
  • A quote tool that asks interior or exterior, how many rooms, and whether the house is occupied or empty.

What every painting and decorating site needs, whatever the town, is on our painters and decorators page.

Painters and decorators in Normanton ask us

  • Nobody searches my town by name. Is a page still worth it?

OpenSEO returned no row for any of the eight Normanton phrases queried in September 2026. No volume is recorded for any of them, which is a measurement rather than a verdict. The same tool recorded 40 monthly searches for painters and decorators Pontefract nearby. A page can carry the work, the areas and the route to you whatever the tool reports.

  • Does the conservation area affect exterior work?

Wakefield Council names Normanton among the 31 conservation areas in the district and says designation brings control over demolition, strengthened controls over minor development and special provision for trees. It also says even relatively minor works such as painting may affect the character of a listed building, and advises contacting its Conservation Team before starting any works.

  • Who else is listed in Normanton?

On 17 September 2026 the Maps pull returned 40 listings, eight with a Normanton postal town in a decorating category, three of those with a website and five with none. Two of the eight are separate listings under one firm name. The local finder returned ten results, three with a website URL. Sample counts on one day.
