Our own totals over the 24 named Swindon areas of the Valuation Office stock table CTSOP4.1, stock at 31 March 2025, count 86,080 properties. 12,070 were built before 1919, which is 14 per cent, and 18,850 before 1940, which is 21.9 per cent. Another 24.4 per cent went up between 1945 and 1972 and 32.2 per cent between 1973 and 1999.
The oldest and the newest areas sit a long way apart on the same table. Central North is 76.8 per cent pre 1919 and Central South and Eastcott 70.4 per cent, while Abbey Park is 99.1 per cent from 2000 onwards and Mouldon Hill and Oakhurst 77.7 per cent. Census 2021 table TS044 records 16.7 per cent of Swindon households in the two recorded flat categories and 29 per cent in terraced houses.

Swindon Borough Council issues the licence for scaffolding and hoarding on the highway. Its page says "The licence application must be made by the scaffolding or hoarding company", that it needs a minimum of five working days before it can process an application, that "A standard licence is valid for 21 working days", that the applicant uploads a public liability insurance certificate for at least ten million pounds and that "The company must hold Chapter 8 Signing, Lighting and Guarding cards or certificates".
The council's guidance separately states that it is an offence, under "section 169 part 5 of the Highways Act", to place scaffolding or hoarding before the permitted date. It publishes its own terms and conditions for the licence and asks applicants to read them before applying.
On heritage, the council's conservation area list names Swindon Old Town with its Devizes Road, Prospect Place and Town Gardens designations, the Swindon Railway Conservation Area and Swindon, Rodbourne Cheney. It records Article 4 Directions on the railway conservation area and at Bishopstone.

The local field, 16 September 2026
We counted the Google Maps results for scaffolders in Swindon on 16 September 2026. The sample was 40 listings: eighteen carried a Swindon postal address and seventeen of those were scaffolding firms, twelve with a website and five with none. The eighteenth was a landscaping supply store listed under a scaffolding category, counted as a merchant.
That is one dated sample of one search. What we would do with it is give Central North, Old Town, Gorse Hill, Park North and Abbey Park a page each, carrying the jobs you have finished in them.
Three Swindon firms appeared in the first ten Google local listings we checked for "scaffolders in Swindon", with sites worth opening. One of the three puts the town in the business name and the domain, and carries both a form and a WhatsApp route on the same page.
