Cheshire East Council states: "You need land drainage consent from the Council if you want to do any work that might affect the flow of an ordinary watercourse in Cheshire East". It adds that building any structure, even a temporary one, and planting trees or shrubs within 8 metres of a watercourse in Cheshire East is not permitted without consent from the council, which it attributes to Council Byelaw 10.
The transfer on 1 October 2011 covered qualifying private sewers and lateral drains connected to the public sewer system by 1 July 2011 (gov.uk, the private sewers transfer regulations). Responsibility for an individual pipe should be checked with United Utilities.
United Utilities states: "If you want to build over, or close to, one of our public sewers or lateral drains (this usually means within 3 metres), you need our approval, even if it is located on your land." It runs a Protocol with most local authority building control bodies in its region and names Cumbria, High Peak and Tameside as the areas outside it. On access it states that sufficient access points to the affected sewer, manholes and rodding points, must be provided.

We counted the Google Maps results for drainage companies in Crewe on 16 September 2026. The sample was 40 listings: 33 had a website and 7 had none. Nine carry a Crewe CW1 or CW2 address. The rest of the field is drawn in from Nantwich, Sandbach, Winsford, Holmes Chapel, Macclesfield, Market Drayton, Telford, Shrewsbury, Stafford, Wolverhampton, Chester, Holywell, Deeside and the Wirral, and several of those listings are paving or landscaping firms.
